Insta360 X4: my experience since November 2024

Why I use it in the field

Image quality, ease of use and its effectiveness while filming are the reasons I keep using the X4. I use it with a chest strap for my electric scooter tests.

This equipment helps me film and document my tests. Recorded footage alone is not a measurement of speed, braking distance or range.

Record in 360°, then choose the framing

The flexibility of 360° footage is one of the things I appreciate most. I can record without perfect framing during the shoot, then reframe the footage afterwards.

That flexibility suits filming on the move during my electric scooter tests.

Image quality and the built-in microphone

I am pleased with the image quality in my own use. The camera is straightforward and effective in the field, although my choice of resolution depends on the light.

The built-in microphone is another strength: I find its quality very good. I also use my RØDE Wireless PRO with the official X4 microphone adapter.

Low light: 8K is not always my choice

At night or in dark surroundings, 8K does not always give me the best result. In my use, 5.7K+ often produces a cleaner image.

That is an observation from my own filming conditions, not a universal rule.

Lens guards: watch for dust and smudges

I use the lens guards supplied with the X4. Dust and smudges beneath them need attention because they can show up in the image.

Heat, battery life and reliability since purchase

I have had no reliability issues with this X4 since buying it in November 2024.

It gets warm during sustained use, but that has never caused me any particular trouble. I have no notable battery-life problems to report either. These observations apply to my camera and my usage; they do not establish a measured runtime.

The accessories and audio system I use

RØDE Wireless PRO

The RØDE Wireless PRO is my main audio system for Le Tech. I bought it myself in April 2026 and use it with the official X4 microphone adapter. It was not supplied free of charge and has no associated RØDE partnership.

Would I still recommend the X4?

Yes, I still recommend the X4, particularly when it costs substantially less than a newer generation. When prices are close, it makes sense to consider the latest model.

For someone who wants to film on the move and reframe 360° footage afterwards, this remains a camera I can recommend from my own experience. Its low-light behaviour and the care needed with the lens guards are the main points I would keep in mind.
